What Is Grass? How the Decentralised Bandwidth Network Rewards Users in GRASS Tokens

Residential internet connections are active around the clock, but a large amount of that capacity goes unused. Before Grass, that unused bandwidth was quietly extracted by software bundled into free applications, VPNs, and browser extensions, without user knowledge, consent, or compensation. Grass converts that idle capacity into a resource by routing web requests from verified institutional partners through users' internet connections and rewarding users for their contribution.

Residential proxy networks aren't new. What's changed is how participants are recruited and compensated. Historically, personal internet connections were often incorporated into these networks through software bundled into free apps, VPNs, and browser extensions, frequently without clear disclosure to users, who neither consented explicitly nor received any share of the value generated.

Grass installs as a background application on desktop or Android as well as a google chrome extension. Once connected, the Grass network routes outbound data requests from verified institutional clients through the user's internet connection. The user's device acts as a node, sharing idle bandwidth and earning points across two dimensions: uptime points for keeping the node online and connected (plus successful referrals of new users), and network points for active bandwidth usage when Grass routes traffic through the node. Grass Points are a key factor in determining how many Grass Tokens users will be eligible to receive in future airdrops. Grass states that they have zero access to your browsing history, personal files, or device content. The only information that a user needs to provide Grass to participate is the email, a username, wallet address, and their IP address.

GRASS is the digital asset of the Grass network. On 28 October 2024, Grass distributed 100 million GRASS Tokens to more than 2 million wallets through the airdrop program, equivalent to approximately $200 million based on the average token price in the 30 days following distribution (28 October – 27 November 2024). Users earn points by running the Grass application, and those points are used to programmatically determine each user's allocation in future airdrops.
